Understanding the Metals

What's Inside a Catalytic Converter?

Platinum

The workhorse of diesel converters and DPFs. South Africa produces around 70% of the world's platinum, and local pricing follows the global spot market closely.

Palladium

The dominant catalyst metal in petrol vehicles. Most modern petrol converters carry more palladium than platinum, which is why petrol cats often price differently to diesel.

Rhodium

The rarest and most valuable of the three — used in small amounts to control NOx emissions. Even a few grams of rhodium loading can move a converter's value significantly.

How this affects your quote

Each converter model carries a known loading of Pt, Pd and Rh. We identify your converter by its reference code, apply current market prices to its metal content, and quote accordingly. When markets rise, so do our offers — and you can verify the numbers on this page any time.
